Polydex Pharmaceuticals holds extensive patents covering Ushercell's synthesis and its use as a contraceptive antimicrobial agent protecting against HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia trachomatis and herpes simplex virus 1 and 2. Currently the lead product in the Polydex pipeline, Ushercell is a high-molecular-weight cellulose sulphate compound having completed a dozen safety and acceptability trials over the past decade. It was first synthesized by Polydex scientists working in close cooperation with scientists from TOPCAD.
